‘The Story Is Not All Mine, Nor Told
By Me Alone’ Works 1994-2009
,
by Gitte Villesen

May 20th - June 10th 2011

A selection of Gitte Villesen’s works will be on display at Archive Kabinett from the 20th of May until 10th of June.

‘The story is not all mine, nor told by me alone. Indeed I am not sure whose story it is; you can judge better. But it is all one, and if at moments the facts seem to alter with an altered voice, why then you can choose the fact you like best; yet none of them are false, and it is all one story.’ Ursula LeGuin, The Left Hand of Darkness

The talk between theorist Hanne Loreck, artist Ines Schaber and artist Gitte Villesen
will take as it’s point of departure a series of quotes from the feminist science fiction novel –
The Left Hand of Darkness (1969), by Ursula Le Guin. This novel is also the origin of the title of Gitte Villesen’s book. In the novel some characters chose their own gender, others train themselves to talk telepathically, all of which change the conditions for a conversation. The construction of a society is in play.

‘All my works start with a curiosity toward a specific person – and how each person approaches their life, certain attitudes, their passions, ideas and dreams, and how this combines with the reality in which they live, whether that’s related to gender, or cultural or historical circumstances. The work deals with stories, and an awareness of what it means to tell someone else’s story. Each work is a portrait of a meeting as much as it is a portrait of a specific person.’

Gitte Villesen documents these encounters in videos and installations, which are often combined with additional material such as photographs, texts, or collections of objects.

‘The Story Is Not All Mine, Nor Told By Me Alone’ Works 1994-2009 is edited by Dan Kidner and Gitte Villesen. It presents most of her works made since 1994. Brett Bloom, Hanne Loreck, Lotte Moller, Jan Verwoert and the artist herself are the authors of the texts in the publication. It was conceived in a collaboration between the artist and Lina Grumm from HIT. Lina will be also present throughout the evening. The publication is part of the series of artists’ projects edited by Christoph Keller published by JRP-Ringier.
